Your Role:

Reporting to the Manager, Financial Reporting & Tax, the Assistant Tax Manager is responsible for the oversight of Global Relay’s dynamic tax function. This newly created role has incredible growth potential for someone ready to proactively manage the increasing complexity of Global Relay’s domestic and international tax requirements. As Global Relay continues to grow, the Assistant Tax Manager will play an instrumental role in designing, implementing and refining all tax related processes and controls of the organization. Global Relay’s subject matter expert in everything tax, the Assistant Tax Manager will have involvement in a vast scope of responsibilities ranging from tax planning to tax compliance for both the direct and indirect tax functions, which are international in scope. In the future, the Assistant Tax Manager will have an opportunity to play an instrumental role in developing and expanding Global Relay’s tax team.


Your Job:


  • Lead the preparation and primary review of Global Relay’s portfolio of interim and year-end corporate tax provisions for multiple entities in various jurisdictions, including: Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation and submission of domestic and international information returns (e.g., T5, NR4, and NR6) and various corporate franchise taxes throughout the United States
  • Responsible for providing corporate tax return information to external consultants and performing comprehensive review of deliverables thereof
  • Work closely with the finance team and external consultants to drive processes related to the Scientific Research & Experimental Development (‘SR&ED’) and Research & Development Expenditure Credit (‘RDEC’) programs, ensuring completeness and accuracy of capturing information required for such claims
  • Manage both the documentation and implementation of transfer pricing strategies and policies for Canadian and foreign subsidiary entities, including performing modelling and engaging with external consultants when necessary
  • Own the financial reporting impact of corporate taxes including the recognition of corporate tax expense and disclosure within Global Relay’s financial statements, book-to-tax analyses, and financial statement recognition and presentation of the SR&ED and RDEC programs
  • Manage taxation related audit queries and information requests
  • Stay current with relevant Canadian and international tax law, trends, and developments
  • Identify and assist with global tax planning strategies in conjunction with the Manager, Financial Reporting & Tax, Chief Financial Officer, and external consultants
  • Perform ad hoc tax analysis on tax implications of transactions as needed
  • Manage compliance of sales tax, use tax, GST/HST, PST, and VAT returns in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom
  • Oversee the complete and accurate application of Global Relay’s sales tax collection and reporting requirements
  • Monitor sales tax nexus thresholds and perform detailed research of when sales tax nexus has been breached
  • Own the sales taxability conclusions for Global Relay’s nuanced product offering by performing thorough research and exercising strong problem solving skills when assessing state and local sales tax legislation against Global Relay’s facts and circumstances
  • Champion the recent implementation of a sales tax engine (Avalara), including designing and optimizing processes to drive efficiency and accuracy of sales tax collection, reporting and remittance
  • Manage all tax related inquiries (internal and external) and maintain all tax documentation related to the taxability of services such as tax residency, and exemption certificates and other artefacts
  • Participate in ad hoc tax, accounting and finance projects, analyses and initiatives when required


About You:


  • A minimum of 4 years in tax experience in an accounting firm and/or industry. Experience in indirect tax is not mandatory for this role but would be an asset
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (‘CPA’) with at least 2 years of post-designation experience
  • Completion of the In-depth Tax Course would be an asset
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of Canadian corporate tax rules
  • Familiarity with United States and United Kingdom corporate tax rules is an asset
  • Knowledge of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprise (‘ASPE’)
  • Proven track record in team management, including coaching and providing feedback to work prepared by junior members of staff
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and time-manage
  • Impeccable accuracy with numbers and high attention to detail
  • Expert proficiency with Excel, with advanced knowledge of Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent telephone etiquette and ability to write clear, concise and formal business communications
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion and to be entrusted with confidential information
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with Avalara’s AvaTax sales tax engine is an asset
